Terrible Tweens

Let’s face it, tweens and teens don’t have the greatest reputation…
words that pop into my mind are “Messy, moody and… well…. monsters?!” Is that too mean!?

I have a tween and a teen.
Yes.
I did NOT think that through!

But when it comes to their rooms, I really really DID think it through.
Eventually.

To say that my kids rooms have gone through the the rainbow is an understatement.
We had the pink with polka dots phase,
The racing car with yellow, orange and black stage,
The deep teal peacock stage,
The grey and dark green stage,
the pale apple green stage…

The peacock stage - it wasn’t terrible. But it was…. not great!

I do not miss that racing car stage!

AND SO MANY MORE….!

I was done.
I cannot keep changing the paint colours like it’s the British weather.
I left that behind when I left the UK, and I am doing the same with the painting.

Let’s think about my daughter to start with.
She’s an artist, UBER creative, social, a dancer, loves listening to stories while painting, loves to sit on the floor, reading, and appreciates colour and beauty.

So I decided to make a ton of built in furniture for her, including a large window seat where she can chill with a book, or her brothers can chill while she paints. She also needed a large desk surface for all her art, fashion designing and million projects she has on the go at all times!
But she also loves cozy. So a fluffy rug was the only thing she insisted on!

Since I’m rebelling against constantly painting rooms - I decided to go for a more grown up approach to the colour scheme and to choose a theme that would grow with her, and would easy remain a colour scheme that adults would be happy with.

Storage was a big thing - she has so many bits and pieces, and books, and fabric swatches, and a million trinkets that she’s sentimental about (which I regularly make her cull - because ain’t no hoarders living under my roof!) so I made sure that the bed I found off the street (!) had drawers underneath, and I made cubby holes underneath the window seat for baskets (coz I am obsessed with wicker baskets!), as well as plenty of shelves above her desk for her books.

What do you think!?

The whole room is cozy, comfortable and inviting

It you must have stuff - put it in something pretty!

STORAGE! In all available corners!

This desk is a parallelogram shape, which is fixed to the window seat and wall. It’s a great size and she spends hours here!

But even once you’ve nailed all the big bits and pieces - it’s always about the finishings, the small details, the parts that pull it all together!

Those canvases, that rattan bag, that wall hanging, those candles…

To me - THAT is the art of design.
Making a good design - HOME.

I am obsessed with these canvases! They’re so stunning! Click the image to shop them, and a TON of beautiful homeware!
